(5 jun. 1928, Shipley, Yorkshire, Inglaterra–14 nov. 1991, Los Ángeles, Cal., EE.UU.).

Director británico. Junto con la English Stage Co. fue aclamado por su dirección de Mirando atrás con ira (1956) de John Osborne, e impulsó a la compañía a llevar a escena innovadores montajes de obras clásicas, como también a producir obras de Eugène Ionesco y Samuel Beckett. Sus producciones experimentales estimularon una renovadora vitalidad creativa en la escena inglesa durante la década de 1950. Posteriormente dirigió El animador (1958) y Un sabor a miel (1960) en Broadway, y en 1958 junto con Osborne formó una compañía cinematográfica que produjo versiones fílmicas de las obras de Osborne, como La soledad del corredor de fondo (1962) y Tom Jones (1963, premio de la Academia). Entre sus últimas películas se cuentan La última carga (1968), Ned Kelly (1970) y Las cosas que nunca mueren (1993). Se casó con Vanessa Redgrave y las hijas de ambos, Miranda y Joely Richardson, son actrices de cine.
